  10.        This document describes the features of Release 5.3 of the
  11.        PC-NFS server-side software option for IRIX. The PC-NFS
  12.        option includes the PC-NFS daemon service (pcnfsd) and other
  13.        server-side software.

  30.        1.1  _W_h_a_t__i_s__p_c_n_f_s_d__a_n_d__w_h_y__d_o__I__n_e_e_d__i_t

  32.        The PC-NFS product provides its basic file-sharing features
  33.        without requiring specialized server-side software (aside
  34.        from the optional NFS software) or management procedures.
  35.        When PC-NFS software users need only generally accessible
  36.        exported file systems and do not need networked printer
  37.        services, the Irix administrative tasks can be limited to
  38.        issuing network addresses and host names.  User
  39.        authentication services and shared network printing support
  40.        require the addition of the PC-NFS Daemon on an Irix server.

  42.        The PC-NFS daemon (pcnfsd) program is provided because the
  43.        MS-DOS operating system (on the PC) does not offer the
  44.        diversity of a multiuser Irix environment.  While the PC-NFS
  45.        product provides its essential functions without special
  46.        arrangements on the NFS server side, pcnfsd is necessary to
  47.        broaden the range of options available to MS-DOS users.
  48.        Specifically, pcnfsd provides the following services:

  50.        1.1.1  _A_u_t_h_e_n_t_i_c_a_t_i_o_n  This is a way for users to identify
  51.        themselves to the Irix Operating System and to be granted
  52.        appropriate privileges for file access and program execution
  53.        on the network.

  55.        1.1.2  _A_c_c_e_s_s__t_o__p_r_i_n_t_e_r__s_p_o_o_l_i_n_g__s_e_r_v_i_c_e_s  This enables PC
  56.        users to print on printers attached to servers on the
  57.        network (including printers driven by the Impressario
  58.        software), and to monitor and delete print jobs in network

  94.        After you install the online release notes for a product
  95.        (the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s subsystem), you can view the release notes on
  96.        your screen.

  98.        Note:  You can read the online release notes for most
  99.               products before installing the software.  Refer to
  100.               the booklet in your CD-ROM case for more information.

  102.        If you have a graphics system, select ``Release Notes'' from
  103.        the Help submenu of the Toolchest. This displays the
  104.        _g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) graphical browser for the online release notes.

  106.        Refer to the _g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) man page for information on
  107.        options to this command.

  109.        If you do not have a graphics system, you can use the
  110.        _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s command.  Refer to the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) man page for
  111.        accessing the online release notes.
